Lord Krishna![]() In Hinduism, Lord Krishna is supposed to be the most important of incarnations of Vishnu. Vishnu, who represents one of the powerful trinities amongst the three deities in Hinduism, has the highest popularity too. Lord Krishna was the quintessential Indian man, dark and handsome and was coveted by several women called the gopis. The derivation of the word Krishna means dark and this means the intriguing mystery that black brings along with it. Since times immemorial people chant the name of Lord Krishna in the form of Hare Krishna in order to invoke his blessings on them. They go rapturous when they hear the name Krishna. Most people look up to Lord Krishna as their savior and hero worship him. Most people consider Lord Krishna to have the most influencing leadership qualities and those of a teacher, friend and philosopher all rolled into one. Krishna has scores of followers and admirers all over the world. Lord Krishna has greatly influenced what people think of their life and culture. This influence is all encompassing and is not only in certain spheres of culture or the life of the disciples. Lord Krishna has gone on to influence people’s minds and their religious beliefs and everyday thoughts too. People get attracted to Lord Krishna based on what the mysterious sayings and the dance and song that is associated with him. There is a lot one can read about Krishna in the form of literature, song, dance and folklore that is typically Indian. Lord Krishna lived on this earth way back in the period that was from 3200 to 3100 BC. Krishna was born at midnight in the Hindu month called Shravan, which falls in August. His birthday is celebrated by the disciples who are spread all over the world with great pomp and show and by chanting Hare Krishna. There are a lot of things that are associated with the lord Krishna that indicates that he had been bestowed with supernatural powers right since his birth. The first miracle after birth: Legend and folklore tell us that when the lord Krishna was just six days old when a lady demon tried to kill him. However, Krishna was able to kill the demon by suckling at her breasts and removing the life out of her. Right since the time he was a child, he was able to kill other devils too such as Trunavarta, Keshi and Bakasur. The main feat of Lord Krishna during that time was the killing of Kali Nag which was a king cobra and making the water of the river Yamuna absolutely poison free. Lord Krishna as a young boy: When the lord Krishna was a young boy he made all the cow-herdesses who were also known as gopis dance to his tune. He used to play the most mellifluous of music that one had ever heard. This made him the center of attention for all the village folk. He lived in Gokul which in the Northern part of India. Krishna was known for his antiquities as a child by stealing curd and butter from the gopis. Krishna impressed the people around him by doing a lot of unheard of tasks such as driving the mysterious serpert Kaliya away from the river. He is also believed to have lifted the Govardhana hill with only his little finger. After returning to Mathura and killing his wicked uncle, he became the king of Dwarka. There he married Rukmini and two other women, Jambavati and Satyabhama. Lord Krishna was the real hero of the greatest epic Mahabharata. Lord Krishna was the mentor between Kauravas and Pandavas. But all the efforts of Lord Krishna to stop the war were gone in vein and the war of Kurukshetra broke out. The war of Kurukshetra or Mahabharata was fought between Kauravas and Pandavas in the year 3000. At that time when Arjun was in indeterminate situation to fight with his Guru, cousins and relatives, Lord Krishna spoke with him and gave him the famous lecture (updesh) of ”SheemadbhagvadGeeta” or “Geeta”. SheemadbhagvadGeeta is one of the most important Hindu scriptures and considered as one of the most important philosophical classics of the world. |
